Brake Light Trim Removal

Post by rirealtor »

looking to remove the chrome surrounds for the brake light and reverse lights to get re-chromed, but cannot get it to budge. Is it just the 4 locking nuts directly surrounding the brake bulb with removal from inside the interior panel (3/8 I believe)? it seems like that holds the light body, but not the chrome piece visible from exterior. And then push outward or pry from body?
I noticed some rust in lower quarter panel in pass side where jack was stored, so also looking to find source of intrusion.

I should have stated - its a 4 door Wagoneer (75), so slightly different light assembly. Thanks I'll give it a thump tomorrow.
Any vendors sell the black trim/seal underneath?

As far as I know, nobody offers the body gasket, just the lens gasket.
I made a pair for my 76 using 2mm sheet nylon from Tap Plastics.

As for body gasket, seam sealer or use the foam from Joan fabric

Removing the lens unit from the body, there are 4 nuts accessed from inside the quarter panel

Check this built to get an idea of the tailight unit

Here's a tip for those who care. Buy some rubber roofing sheet, it makes great gaskets, trace the shape and carefully cut with scissors, or with a rotary knife. This was the only way I could get body badge gaskets to replace old rotted ones.

thanks Tats- that was the trick. even though the mounting points are different ( 4 vs 2- just like the doors!), same principle applies here. solid thump or two on the studs from the inside and was just enough to pry away from body. a nice sludge was found underneath/behind, so I believe water was coming in from the wood trim mounting point ( the larger diameter hole seen in the above pic in the lower quarter panel)
