I had to give mine gentle persuasion with a mallet. If that fails disconnect it at the column end too and try taking it apart on the work bench. They assembled it somehow!

Nut and Bolt must be removed from rag joint before you try to remove shaft . J20 Flare boxes pre 1979 . J20 O-ring boxes1980 newer are two different animals . J20 Flare boxes are better bigger piston . 1980 and newer o-ring boxes I think are all the same wagoneer grand wagoneer Cherokee j10 j20 all have the same size piston just away to cut costs...

P.S. If you have a flare box you will have a different spline count than a o-ring box

Unfortunately I have done this a couple times and I find that the upper joint is usually worn out too. I have replaced the entire shaft with a CJ HD manual steering shaft. And it works great. Omix-Ada #18024.01. if you shop around you can find them for about $100. Just another option.

When i check the lenght of this Omix Ada it doesn't add up with the shaft on my SJ. That's only 23", while the replacement says 34". Why is this such a big difference? I do need a new shaft, the u-joint is busted but i'm not sure what to order. Impossible tot return when imported in Holland...…
I've found this one ; Crown Automotive Lower Steering Shaft Assembly with Power Steering J5354934

Crown states it fits the SJ..

Anyone?

Hey sorry for the late response havn't been online in a bit. I have used the omix ada part in 3 different FSJ's so I know it works as long as you have a box with a 3/4" input. The steering shafts have slip shafts so you have a little bit of adjust ability there but it is nowhere near a 10" different. I had to extend the shaft maybe an inch or two.
