74 and earlier cable shift Q-Tracs? Rare?

Post by Tatsadasayago »

While pulling an engine out of a 74 Wagoneer today I noticed the Quadra Trac transfer case was very clean, had a part time kit in it AND was cable operated.
My questions are:
Is the cable operated QT different than those that came with the vacuum switch? ie; same unit with a dealer installed add-on gear reduction and cable?
Is the cable and actuator rare/valuable?

I can't justify the price the salvage yard wants for it, but thought I better ask in case this is a rare transfer case and/or cable before it goes to the crusher.

I believe '76 and older QT's were cable operated. I have a '77 with dealer installed reduction unit and it had a cable vs. the lever. I pulled a QT out of a 75 and it was cable operated.

Okay, thanks for confirming what I suspected regarding the add-on reduction units.

QT is the same. The cable shifter is for Low Range and was the shifter used in 73-75 models. The flag shifter came out in 76. The lever attached to the low range itself is different for the cable shifter than the one used for flag shifters.

Thanks for the info Flint!
I figured the cable and cover were probably the only difference. Not sure if it's worth getting or not.

I saved the low range from my '73 J4000 which was cable operated (the cable lives on in an Eagle) It had been converted to PT and O/D.

I'd pull it and hang on to it. I have a 78 QT with the flag shifter. I also have the cable shifter as well, just need the cable bracket for the cable shifter. I also have a spare QT, both have the low range. They are hard to come by. I myself would buy the entire setup as a spare. You can never have to many spare parts. :D Curious though, what are they asking for the setup?

175.00 plus a 75.00 core charge. That's why I've been wishy washy over grabbing the cable and PT.
I've thrown away so many QTs I feel sick at times.

Wow! That is a lot. I hate overpaying for parts but the QTs are getting harder to come by. If you have the cash I say go for it. You can never have too many parts
