Ok, had this issue for a bit and now I’m annoyed enough to do something.
When starting, starter stays engaged.
Today, didn’t even spin over (no click, nothing, but all other electrical from fuel pump to radio working) but everything else worked. Came back later, fired right up like nothing happened.
The starter often stays engaged, the not starting has been intermittent on way that occurs.
Where and how to isolate issue?

next time the starter stays on, crawl with a BFH and wack the starter a little bit, to see if it disengages.... probably new starter, been there done it... and don't get a vatozone starter...

I don´t mean to hijack this thread but I'm having a similar problem except it doesn't stay engaged, I switch the key to run, it starts, then I hear a grinding that lasts less than a second right after the engine starts, I think it's dissengaging too slowly and it catches on the flywheel as the bendix retracts, would a couple of hits fix this or maybe dismounting>remounting it?. It started happening today as I was trying to diagnose a problem with the ignition system, I used the screwdriver on solenoid trick to start it from the engine bay, I didn't have a good grip on the screwdriver and the first bump it just spun a bit, then I properly started it and this problem surfaced.
