I recently dropped my tank, installed new sender and sensor, and installed all new fuel lines. My 79 didn't have a skid plate. It is attached with 2 bolts and nuts in the front, one bolt and nut on the rear, and a center strap. I'm assuming you must have severe rust? My 84 and 85 had skid plates as well as all the mounting hardware for the tanks similar to my 79.
I'm sure 1980 is the cutoff for the plastic "coffin" tank that was always supported by the skid plate. There are still straps that hold the tank down to the skid plate, but the tank is supported by the skid. Prior to that, the skid plate was an optional extra and the steel tank was held up by the straps. The skid plate was a popular option, but some did not get it - my '77 J10 has no fuel tank skid plate.
